FORT LAUDERDALE

Like many southeast Florida neighbors, Fort Lauderdale has long been revitalizing. In a state where tourist zones often stand apart from downtown areas, Fort Lauderdale connects travelers with the ocean along the 2-mile Las Olas corridor. The vibrant ambience results from upgrades both downtown and on the beachfront. Matching the downtown’s innovative arts district, cafés and boutiques is an equally inventive beach area, with hotels, cafés and shops facing the shoreline, featuring new resort-style hotels.

Harbour Island

Harbour Island is a small slip of island, extending three miles from north to south and less than half a mile wide. Fast becoming a destination of choice, Harbour Island’s miles and miles of pink sand (the pink color comes from a microscopic organism called foraminifera, with a reddish-pink shell) is Instagram gold. But, social-media posts aside, the charming pastel-colored homes with white picket fences and bougainvillea-draped doorways, friendly locals waving hello, and delicious fresh seafood coupled with the lack of tourists—Harbour Island is exceedingly difficult to get to—make this Bahamian retreat the real Paradise Island.

Exuma Islands

Stretching over some 200 miles southeast of Nassau, the Exuma archipelago consists of 365 cays and islands. Next to Great Exuma and Little Exuma, Moriah Harbour Cay National Park protects a wide array of habitats, including mangrove creeks, beautiful beaches, sand dunes and sea grass beds. Birds found in the area include ospreys, gull-billed and least terns, plovers, oystercatchers, and the nocturnal nighthawks.

Conception Island

Conception Island is an uninhabited island in The Bahamas, and a protected Bahamas National Land and Sea Park. Approximately 3 square miles, the island is pristine, with idyllic powder white beaches and crystal-clear water. Conception Island is an important nesting location for seabirds and a hatching site for green sea turtles. Snorkelers and divers will see a wide array of tropical fish, among them queen angelfish, Nassau groupers, rainbow parrotfish and blue tangs. Lucky visitors may get to see wild dolphins that frequent the area at times.

Clarence Town

Separated by the Tropic of Cancer, Clarence Town is a tale of two coastlines. Set more or less on the center of Long Island’s east coast, the town benefits from all the classics that one would expect in The Bahamas: breathtaking cliffs, brilliant coral reefs and serene beaches. Yet Clarence Town’s biggest claim to fame is that it is home to the world’s second largest Blue Hole. Named Dean’s Blue Hole, the 663-feet (202-meter) deep phenomenon is spectacularly beautiful.
